XPO Expands Heavy Goods Service in Europe

XPO Logistics Inc. is expanding its movement of heavy goods to Europe, providing last-mile delivery service to such new markets as France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.

XPO said it would manage more than 750,000 last-mile deliveries this year from retailers and e-commerce companies in Europe.

“Our last-mile expansion to Europe is being driven by customer demand, primarily related to e-commerce,” Chief Operating Officer Troy Cooper said. “Consumers are buying more large items online, including furniture and appliances. These are home deliveries that often require white glove services, such as assembly, installation and testing.”

The company recently reported that its last-mile revenue in 2017’s fourth quarter jumped more than 21% to $286.5 million.

“Last mile is on fire right now, mainly due to e-commerce,” CEO Brad Jacobs told Transport Topics. “E-commerce customers, as a whole across all our business lines is … growing 20% year-over-year. Retail/e-tail is up to 29% of our companywide revenue.”

XPO said it would expand in North America this year, with plans to open 30 last-mile hubs to grow its total to 85 U.S. hubs. Greenwich, Conn.-based XPO facilitates about 13 million deliveries annually in North America. It operates in 32 countries with 1,455 locations.
