XPO Logistics is offering to pay individuals to become truck drivers, providing free tuition and a paycheck while earning a commercial driver license at one of its less-than-truckload service centers in the United States.

Company officials said they expect more than 150 trainees to complete courses in 2017. Students work for XPO in part-time positions as dockworkers while attending classes and receiving 150 hours of coaching from veteran drivers. Experienced drivers also can qualify to learn specific skills associated with LTL transportation or about terminal yard operations.

“Our CDL training is a unique opportunity in that both the company and the student have skin in the game,” Tony Brooks, president of XPO’s less-than-truckload business, said in a statement May 24. “Students commit to classroom and hands-on instruction, and XPO provides free tuition and income while training.”

The equivalent cost of training at for-profit driver training schools is about $5,000, the company said.

Students who finish training, pass the CDL tests and complete a probationary period are eligible for a full-time driving job at XPO with benefits that include health care, profit-sharing and a 401(k) retirement contribution plan.

“The program is designed to create satisfying careers for professional drivers who share our focus on safety and customer service,” Brooks said.

XPO Logistics ranks No. 3 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers. It also is No. 3 on the list of largest carriers in the LTL freight sector.
