Amazon.com Inc. is creating its first big foothold in Montana with a last-mile shipping delivery facility for the entire state, Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Dec. 16.

The online retail giant is constructing a 72,000-square-foot delivery station at 9121 Cartage Road in Missoula in the company’s first major investment in the state.

“We’re thrilled Amazon has recognized Montana’s business-friendly environment, unmatched quality of life, and hardworking and talented workforce, and look forward to the 100 good-paying jobs their investment will bring to Missoula,” Gianforte said.

According to the governor’s office, the new “last-mile” delivery station will receive orders from larger Amazon facilities across the United States and dispatch delivery vans to bring those orders to customers throughout the state.

Montana’s 2022 freight plan shows the volume of air cargo rose 34% to 170 million tons in 2020 compared with three years earlier due to increased e-commerce and a growing population. According to the state Department of Transportation, most air cargo is inbound (66%) and transported by truck to final destinations.

Amazon’s new industrial site is being built a little more than 4 miles from Missoula International Airport, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 93 and Interstate 90 and close to two truck stops.

  • Missoula

“We look forward to bringing faster and more efficient package delivery to Montana residents, as well as to growing our partnerships with businesses and community organizations in the area,” Amazon spokesperson Leigh Anne Gullett said. “This new delivery station in Montana will connect Amazon’s national fulfillment network to customers in Missoula and beyond, while also creating more than 100 new jobs within the community during the coming years.”

Amazon ranks No. 19 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest private carriers in North America.
