Brown Trucking Acquires Tennessee Carrier

James Brown Contracting said Monday it has acquired Schrader Trucking Co., a Jefferson City, Tenn.-based dry van truckload carrier. Terms were not disclosed.

Brown, which does business as Brown Trucking, is a dedicated short-haul truckload carrier based in Lithonia, Ga., near Atlanta. It was started in West Virginia in the 1960s and has about 600 trucks and more than 3,000 trailers.

“The Schrader name has a strong reputation in the marketplace for high service quality, making it an excellent fit with Brown Trucking,” said John Richardson, managing partner of Navigation Capital Partners, which acquired Brown in 2008.

“Schrader’s service area supplements Brown’s geographic footprint, and the additional resources will strengthen and enhance the company as we build the leading provider in the Southeast,” he said in a statement.

Schrader, which also has logistics operations, has 95 trucks and 201 trailers. It operates across the Southeast and in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Texas and Canada, and its primary commodities are plastics, vinyl films, retail, building materials and industrial machinery parts.

The company was formed in 1960. President Phil Schrader will exit the business, while co-owner and Vice President Tom Hodge will remain and become director of business development for Brown Trucking.
