b>Follow Up: In the December issue, iTECH outlined why Customs will require electronic manifests for truck entries to the United States. Preparation time is running short, authorities say.

More cross-border carriers are getting ready to file electronic manifests before the U.S. Customs and Border Protection makes such filing mandatory as early as August.

The number of qualified trucking fleets more than tripled in six months, to 688 in March from 198 last September, said Paula Keicer, public affairs specialist for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

It appears, however, that perhaps tens of thousands of other carriers in the three nations of North America are taking a wait-and-see approach, according to trucking executives and others involved in implementing the system.
