GXO Logistics has completed the installation of an automated packaging solution that fits boxes to their contents, the company announced Feb. 2.

The Greenwich, Conn.-based contract logistics provider said the machine saves on materials, reduces shipping costs and enhances sustainability by enabling exact sizing. It was installed at a company facility in the Lyon region of France. Amer Sports is the first of its customers to utilize the process.

“This 3D packaging solution doesn’t just support Amer Sports’ e-commerce growth, it revolutionizes packaging,” said Bernard Wehbe, general manager of France at GXO. “The machine demonstrates our significant investment in technology and automated solutions that improve productivity and reduce shipping costs for our customers while also minimizing the environmental impact.”

The automated packaging machine uses 3D generation technology and automation to scan and measure orders before cutting and folding the cardboard with reinforced corners for an exact fit. It then weighs, seals and labels the package before directing it to the appropriate carrier. The machine can process up to 700 packages per hour.

“Our work with GXO at the Saint-Vulbas distribution center illustrates Amer Sports’ desire to continue to invest in improving customer satisfaction through a better packaging experience,” said François Besson, a logistics development and execution manager at Amer Sports.

The company has been developing and testing new features on the machine since February 2020. Now that final testing and employee training has been completed, the company is running the machine at full speed.

GXO was formed last year after splitting from XPO Logistics, which ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 50 list of the largest logistics companies in North America and No. 3 on the TT Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers. — Transport Topics
