A handful of electronic logging devices have now received certification for Canada’s federal ELD mandate.

Transport Canada’s list of approved ELDs includes systems from Isaac Instruments and Trimble Transportation, both of which announced device certifications in October.

Unlike the ELD mandate in the United States, which allows vendors to self-certify their own devices, Canada is requiring all ELD hardware and software to be tested and verified by an accredited, third-party certification body.

Canada’s ELD mandate technically went into effect on June 12, but no devices had been certified as compliant at that time. As a result, all Canadian jurisdictions are focusing their initial enforcement efforts on education and awareness. Motor carriers will not face penalties for noncompliance until June 2022.

The regulation requires nearly all motor carriers operating in Canada, including those crossing the border from the United States, to record drivers’ hours-of-service information with ELDs rather than relying on paper logbooks.

Isaac Instruments said its ELDs were certified by FPInnovations after months of evaluation and testing to ensure full compliance with the regulation’s technical specifications. Isaac’s focus on software automation increased the complexity of that process, CEO and co-founder Jacques DeLarochelliere said in an Oct. 13 announcement.

“Our product revolves around the driver, and their lives are made easier through automation, even though it made the one-size-fits-all certification process far more difficult for us,” DeLarochelliere said.

Isaac, which said it supplies ELDs to 40% of the large motor carriers in Canada, has been targeting growth in the U.S. market this year.

Trimble Transportation’s eDriver Logs software also has been certified as compliant with the Canadian ELD mandate when paired with Trimble’s PeopleNet Mobile Gateway hardware.

“We have worked diligently with the certification body to ensure our eDriver Logs ELD meets all of the technical requirements of the Canadian mandate,” Elwyn McLachlan, sector vice president for mobility at Trimble Transportation, said in the company’s Oct. 13 announcement. “By achieving certification, fleets can be confident in selecting our platform to maintain regulatory compliance for their business and their drivers.”

As of early November, other vendors with certified ELDs listed on the Transport Canada website are: Assured Tracking Inc., Diesel Tech Industries, Hutch Systems and Pedigree Technologies.
