Maxion Wheels announced its 64-pound steel truck wheel, Tough and Light, is in production at its San Luis Potosí, Mexico, commercial vehicle steel wheels plant.

Maxion called it the lightest standard five-hole 22.5x8.25 commercial vehicle steel wheel available in the market.

“Improved fuel efficiency, fewer emissions and an increase in payload are just a few of the benefits that come from the lighter wheel. Multiply that by 18 and you have a very smart investment in your total cost of ownership,” said Zeferino Neto, president of the Americas business unit at Maxion Wheels.

With a 7,400-pound payload wheel load rating, Tough and Light features a new hand hole design deviating from the traditional Maxion Wheels D-shape. The new shape is the result of design optimization analysis that reduced wheel structural stresses by more than 10% resulting in an even more efficient and durable wheel when compared with the previous generation, according to the company, which has an administrative office in Novi, Mich.

Maxion Wheels is a division of São Paulo-based Iochpe-Maxion — which has more than 100 years of wheel-making experience and 10,000 employees globally, and notes it is the world’s largest wheel manufacturer producing more than 50 million wheels a year. — Transport Topics
