Meritor Introduces New Wheel-End Package

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Meritor Inc. unveiled a new wheel-end package called AxlePak7, which includes tire-pressure monitoring from Pressure Systems International.

Brett Penzkofer, Meritor's general manager for its trailer division, described the new system as a "premium wheel offering" aimed at the trailers of over-the-road fleets. AP7 has a seven-year warranty.

Penzkofer and James Sharkey, PSI's director of strategic initiatives, introduced AxlePak7 on Feb. 28 here at the annual meeting of American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council.

Penzkofer said the new system will be available in the spring, probably in April.

The system works with either drum or air disc brakes, Penzkofer said, and will be available for new trailers, but it also can be added to existing units via retrofit.

Tire-pressure monitoring increases fuel efficiency and tire life, manufacturers of the systems say, by providing prompt warnings of when tire inflation is low.

Fleet operators buying trailers with Meritor axles will be able to specify AP7 as an option or they can install on retrofit, Meritor said. The warranty covers hubs, bearings, seals, hubcaps and spindle nuts, the company said.
